Here at The English Bed Company we offer a range of high quality mattresses in any standard size to suit the core needs of our customers. However, a lack of knowledge surrounding the pros and cons of each product can cause a great deal of confusion. How do you know which mattress is right for you? Hopefully, this simple guide can inform you enough to help you reach the right decision.

A Few Simple Starting Points…

–         Take into consideration the body weight of each person using the bed. A slim or smaller person may find a mattress with a softer feel more suitable, such as latex or memory foam.

–         The bed should be at least 10cm (4 inches) longer than the tallest person sleeping in it, for example a King Size Bed should be the minimum for somebody over 6ft.

–         People with joint pain may appreciate a memory foam mattress on top of a divan. The softness of the memory foam moulds to the body and offers support for aching joints, stimulating circulation.

–         The base of the bed affects the way that the mattress feels. A sprung divan makes the mattress feel softer than a slatted divan or base, which is something to consider against your own personal preference. Most of our beds are slatted as standard however they can be made as a divan if preferred.

–         A mattress doesn’t have to be hard to be good for you – comfort is the most important aspect. As long as the bed has a good supporting structure, the amount of padding is really down to personal preference. Take some time to decide whether you prefer to lie on a firm mattress or a soft one. Don’t forget you can always visit our Manchester showroom to test our products first-hand.

Reversible Mattress

Pre-Millennium, virtually every mattress was made in this style; two sided mattresses only fell out of favour when new fire safety regulations came into effect. Manufacturers were forced to come up with new ways to comply with safety guidelines whilst also managing to keep prices as low and affordable as possible. They soon realised that there is still a market for the reversible option, bringing back the mattress that is both more hard wearing and able to adapt with the seasons. Our open coil  reversible model boasts one tufted side for summer use and one side of memory foam for the winter, a layer of temperature sensitive visco-elastic material, aiding circulation and heat transfer for sweet dreams in the colder months too.

Pocket Memory

This model boasts a hotel-quality pocket sprung mattress topped with a layer of memory foam for effective temperature control throughout the night. Pocket sprung mattresses are often padded with fillings of natural material such as cotton, lamb’s wool and mohair, whilst the memory foam moulds to your body shape and creates a level of flexibility for the best of both worlds. There are up to 2000 springs in a pocket sprung mattress, housed in separate fabric pockets yet free to move independently at the right tension. Each precision made coil is wrapped in its own cloth sleeve and poised to respond to each movement, an ideal mattress for two people of different weights due to the high quality of independent support.

Natural 1500 Pocket and Natural 2000 Interactive

Our 1500 luxury pocket spring mattress has hand tufted sides with brass breathing holes for ideal ventilation. It contains 100% natural fillings such as wool, cotton, silk and cashmere, so remember to consider any allergies before making a purchase.

This is a medium/soft type mattress, with a rating of 3 on our scale. For a firmer product, we have our Natural Interactive 2000  mattress with a rating of 4, featuring a further layer of smaller springs between the pockets for an extra element of support. Subsequently, there are 2000 pocket springs in this product, creating an extra level of density within the mattress and a much firmer experience.
